Microsoft’s Sanjay Mishra has written and published an excellent whitepaper on MSDN and SQLCAT.COM called “Data Compression: Strategy, Capacity Planning and Best Practices”, which gets into lots of valuable detail about how and when to use the two different types of data compression available in SQL Server 2008.
I’m glad that this finally got published, so everyone can get a look at it. I was able to see it some time ago, since I was one of the technical reviewers. We use data compression quite a bit here at NewsGator, and it has worked very well for us.
