I got the chance to give an updated version of Hardware 201: Selecting and Sizing Database Hardware for OLTP Performance to an audience of about forty people at the Denver SQL Server User’s Group on May 19, 2011, which was a lot of fun. You can download the presentation here.
If you want even more information on this subject, you might consider buying a copy of my upcoming book from Amazon!

Hi Glenn,
Will your book be available in Kindle Edition?
I don’t know for sure, but I think so. Requesting a Kindle Edition on Amazon would not hurt…
Done!
Hi, I was wondering if you had a new update as to when your book will be available for purchase? Thanks, Jason
Amazon says June 30
Awesome! I can’t wait to read it. Thank you, Jason
Glenn,
In your presentation you indicate that Direct Attached Storage (DAS) is optimized for throughput. DAS does very well with IOPS too. Recently announced MegaRAID controllers from LSI deliver performance levels greater than 200,000 RAID 5 random I/Os per second using HDDs. Users can boost performance to 465,000 RAID 5 random IOPS utilizing a single controller connected to 8 SSDs. Throughput is world-class with 2.7 GB/s sequential read and 3.2 GB/s sequential write transfers. Without the overhead of supporting a SAN, DAS can really move data.
