Over the past four day weekend, I spent some time watching a few gems from the late Cold War era on Comcast On Demand. These included Red Dawn and Navy Seals. I remember watching Red Dawn when it was in theatrical release in 1984. I was fresh out of the Marines, attending U.C. Irvine, and I was definitely a Reagan Republican back then. In 1984, I liked the movie so much, I saw it twice in the theatre.
Now, over twenty years later, it seems pretty silly, but still entertaining. There were a lot of young, upcoming actors in Red Dawn, such as Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, Powers Boothe, Jennifer Grey, and Lea Thompson. The filmmakers put some effort into building some pretty convincing looking Soviet vehicles for the movie, such as T-72 tanks and Mi-24 Hind attack helicopters.
Navy Seals has not aged as well in my opinion, although it did have a young Dennis Haysbert, long before he played President Palmer on "24".
