I attended the monthly meeting at the Denver SQL Server Users Group last night, and listed to a presentation by Steve Jones called “The Modern Resume – Building Your Brand”, which was very interesting. Steve is a fellow SQL MVP, who co-founded and now runs SQLServerCentral.com.
The main theme of his talk was the importance of sustained efforts by SQL Server experts to do things that demonstrate and document your knowledge and expertise in a professional manner. These include things like using social networks (such as Linked-In, Facebook, Twitter, etc.), blogging, writing, posting on forums, speaking at events, volunteering, etc.
Activities like this help “build your brand” with an online history than can be found by employers and prospective employers, and it helps strengthen the SQL Server community. Steve is an easy and natural speaker, who got a good response from the audience of about 20 people.
The Denver SQL Server Users Group meets on the third Thursday of each month at the Microsoft office in the Denver Tech Center.
