Benefits Of Windows Instant File Initialization For SQL Server 2005/2008

Fellow MVP Tibor Karaszi has an interesting post up on SQLBlog.com outlining the benefits of Windows Instant File Initialization for SQL Server 2005 and above. I have blogged about this subject several times in the past, but Tibor has some performance benchmarks showing the huge difference that Windows Instant File Initialization makes for database creation time.

Here is where you grant the right to the SQL Server Service Account to enable this right. You will have to restart SQL Server for the change to take effect.  This only works with Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 or better.
