Speaking At PASS 2009

Late Friday night I got a welcome e-mail informing me that I had two speaker sessions that were accepted for the PASS Summit Unite 2009 conference in Seattle in November! This is quite an honor, and it is hard to believe that I will be in the company of some of the foremost SQL Server experts on the planet.

PASS is the Professional Association for SQL Server. Here is the blurb about PASS:

The Professional Association for SQL Server (PASS) is an independent, not-for-profit association, dedicated to supporting, educating, and promoting the Microsoft SQL Server community. From local user groups and special interest groups (SIGs) to webcasts and the annual PASS Community Summit – the largest gathering of SQL Server professionals in the world – PASS enables knowledge sharing, in-depth learning, access to the Microsoft SQL Server team, and the ability to influence the direction of SQL Server technologies.

I actually had two sessions accepted, and another session is an alternate session. These are all “Community Sessions”, which are supposed to be 75 minutes long. Now, I have a lot of work to get all three sessions completely ready by September 30.

Session 1
Tips and Tricks for Using SQL Server 2008 Integrated Full Text Search in a High Volume OLTP Environment

Full Text Search has been completely rewritten in SQL Server 2008 to be natively integrated with the SQL Engine. This can give very significant performance improvements compared to previous versions of Full Text Search. In order to realize all the performance benefits of SQL Server 2008 iFTS, you need to be aware of how to configure, monitor, and maintain your full text catalog/indexes, and the relational base tables that they are based on. This session will give you real-world proven techniques and T-SQL code that you can use to monitor and optimize your full text performance, especially with a volatile, high volume OLTP workload. 

Provide real world guidance on how to configure and maintain iFTS in a high volume OLTP environment.
Demonstrate specific tuning and monitoring techniques for iFTS. against an OLTP workload.
Demonstrate how to use "rolling daily tables" to further increase iFTS search performance.

Session 2
Dr. DMV: How to Use Dynamic Management Views to Monitor and Diagnose Performance Issues With High Volume OLTP Workloads

SQL Server 2005 introduced Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) that allow you to see exactly what is happening inside your SQL Server instances and databases with much more detail than ever before. SQL Server 2008 adds even more capability in this area. You can discover your top wait types, most CPU intensive stored procedures, find missing indexes, and identify unused indexes, to name just a few examples. This session (which is applicable to both 2005 and 2008), presents and explains over thirty DMV queries that you can quickly and easily use to detect and diagnose performance issues in your environment. 

Provide DBAs with a large number extremely useful diagnostic DMV queries. 
Explain how to use and interpret these DMV queries to detect SQL Server performance issues. 
Demonstrate the use of these queries with a system under some load.    

Alternate Session
Using SQL Server 2008 Database Mirroring to Become a Super Hero!

Database mirroring is a valuable technology that can be used to minimize or avoid downtime due to hardware failures, with less complexity than fail-over clustering. It can also be used for other innovative uses, such as easily migrating from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 with a sub-minute outage. Database mirroring can be used during normal scheduled maintenance for rolling updates to minimize downtime. Database mirroring works very well for migrating very large databases from one SAN to another with minimal downtime. This session will cover all of these scenarios, with practical techniques, scripts and tips to help you take advantage of database mirroring. 

Demonstrate how to implement database mirroring in a high volume OLTP environment. 
Show tip and tricks to make deployment and management easier.
Show techniques for maximizing database mirroring performance.
