Microsoft’s Sunil Agarwal and Hermann Daeubler have a nice whitepaper up on MSDN explaining how the new vardecimal storage format works in SQL Server 2005 SP2. The gist of the article is that you may gain some space savings and IO improvement at the cost of some CPU overhead if you use the feature.
